Irving Stops the Madness
Election Date Set on DART Pullout
Irving estimates the number of residents who regularly ride Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) at 2,566, while the city pays $115 million for it. That is the equivalent of buying each regular rider of DART a 2025 BMW 2‑Series.
Imagining enjoying the sharp, lively handling and nimble chassis of this puppy — and best of all, no more threats of violence from your fellow DART passengers.
Not only that, we have the money to purchase a new 2-series for each of them every year with the money we are spending on DART. Only the latest German engineering for our Irving commuters! When we drop out of DART, lets make sure they all can enjoy receiving a new stylish, premium-feel luxury sedan every year — then they can experience the joy of driving for driving’s sake, as opposed to the slow, sad reality of hopping aboard the empty buses and trains that lumber through Irving.
Irving stopped the madness when City Council voted 9-0 last meeting to hold an election in May asking voters if they want to drop out of DART. Three other cities in DART did so in the same week. This week, however, Addison voted not to have a pullout election.
If the voters approve pulling out of DART, DART would cease services in Irving “immediately” after the election. No word on whether they would also “immediately” halt the $2.4 million on executive bonuses for top DART brass, or “immediately” start successfully recruiting younger workers.
Is it possible for a city to have no fixed-route citywide bus lines or light rail? That is what Arlington does with its microtransit system. The truth is that buses and trains have been eclipsed by on-demand ride share. What citizens need to take them to the places they want to go — e.g. to the pharmacy and back — is not a lot of walking, waiting, and transferring. It’s being picked up and dropped off. Traditional public transportation is on its way out, eclipsed by technological advances. Let’s get Irving aboard that train! (metaphorically)
